Performer, Teacher, and Conductor: Dr. Luis Víquez

In this episode, I talk music with Dr. Luis Víquez, who is an Assistant Professor of Clarinet and Director of Orchestras in the University of South Dakota Music Department. When not in Vermillion, he’s traveling the area doing outreach at local schools or working in his native Costa Rica. Among other things, we talk about the upcoming USD Symphony Orchestra concert and the fully-staged opera USD performs every spring. This year it’s Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Gondoliers. But more on that in another episode…

If you’re wondering what Dr. Víquez’s playing sounds like, you can hear some of his music (performed with USD colleague Darin Wadley of the Viquez-Wadley Duo) under the episode’s intro and wrap-up. For more sights and sounds from Dr. Víquez, visit his media page here.

If you’re looking for another conversation with a Siouxland musician, check out the podcast’s episode with SCSO Music Director Ryan Haskins.
